Talk is Cheap

Talk is Cheap.

The Parable of the Two Sons

28 “What do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work today in the vineyard.’
29 “ ‘I will not,’ he answered, but later he changed his mind and went.
30 “Then the father went to the other son and said the same thing. He answered, ‘I will, sir,’ but he did not go.
31 “Which of the two did what his father wanted?”
“The first,” they answered.
Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you. 32 For John came to you to show you the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes did. And even after you saw this, you did not repent and believe him. - Matthew 21:28-32

Devotional

Talk is cheap.  I know that’s not exactly what is written in our Bibles, but that’s definitely what it’s saying. This is one of those passages that brings a smile to my face, not because it makes me feel good, but because it is such a timeless and clear reflection of reality. No matter if you walked with Jesus 2000 years ago or you were born yesterday, if your words and beliefs don’t have actions to back them up, they’re cheap.

Cheap words, cheap grace, cheap faith.

The cost of following Jesus has always been high. That’s why Jesus told us earlier in Matthew’s gospel “Those who try to gain their own life will lose it, but those who lose it for my sake will gain it.” -Matt 10:39
Instead of saying the right things, looking the part, and presenting yourself as a good Christian, go take action for Jesus. Even if most of your life looks like a mess, confess that you need Jesus and start living like a sinner in need of grace, who will do anything to let the rest of the world know your savior.
It's never been about perfection, it's always been about progress. So let's make some progress in looking more like Jesus today. Amen.

Discussion Questions

  1. How do we become followers of Jesus that don’t just talk a good game, but actually live up to our words?
  2. What is one concrete action that I can take this week so that my life looks more like what I profess to believe?

Prayer
Lord, take control of my life. Help me be a person who walks the walk, as well as talks the talk. I can’t do it on my own, I need you. I’m all yours, amen.
